A KEY role in Teignbridge's award-winning CCTV partnership has fallen victim to police staff cuts.

The post of police CCTV liaison officer has been axed as part of swingeing cuts despite a campaign to secure its future.

The decision has been criticized by Newton Abbot Business Security Group.

Chris Long, who has carried out the role since 2004, says he is 'really disappointed' and has appealed against the decision.

Police have reiterated their commitment to cutting crime in Newton Abbot and maintaining the sterling work of the partnership.

Teignbridge Superintendent Glen Mayhew promised all authorities will work together to make sure the camera team continue to work well in the future.

Teignbridge surveillance, a 24-hour camera network across all the district's major towns, is run by Teignbridge council in partnership with the police.

Mr. Long's role was put at risk when Devon and Cornwall Police embarked on a staff review earlier this year to deliver almost £50million savings over the next four years, including reducing the workforce by 700 officers and 500 support staff.

Mr. Long was informed his role would no longer exist last week. He will remain in post until October.

A petition, signed by 1,200, was raised to try to save Mr. Long's role by Newton Abbot's Business Security Group.

Staff reductions were an 'unescapable' aspect of Government spending cuts, Supt Mayhew said.

Cllr Kevin Lake, Teignbridge council's executive member for environment and safety, said: "To the best of our knowledge the changes won't take effect until October this year, so there is some time for the partnership members to discuss the best way forward for the service."
